Human Machine Interface (HMI)

The term "Human Machine Interface" (HMI) refers to the layer that separates a human being who is using a machine from the machine itself.

The interface consists of hardware and software that allow its user to communicate with a machine. In particular, the device translates to user input into stain signals which, in turn, provides the user with the required result.

This is a particularly important topic for Industry 4.0, even if it is not directly covered by the so-colled key enabling technologies (KET). The HMI favor the usability of the machine and can be designed to favor ergonomics, to free the user's hands while operating or to reduce his or her distraction level while giving commands to the machine.
