The history of the European integration is often studied - with reason - from a perspective that emphasises the image of a Europe sharing a common cultural, legal, historical and economic heritage.
Yet, Europe's history has always been, especially in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, one of numerous dichotomies and of religious, economic, political and ideological differences. These are divisions that often go beyond the national frame. The Richie's third annual conference, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the signature of the Treaties of Rome, aims at analysing the history of European integration from the angle of these various dichotomies and in a long-term perspective.
The theme will be analysed in four sessions that will focus on the continuity and breaks in the 19th and 20th Century, on the opposition between the idea of Europe and its actual achievements, on the dichotomy between political Europe and economic Europe and on the dichotomy of a Europe as a power versus a Europe instrument of European states or external powers.
