Prerequisiti
Si richiede una buona conoscenza della letteratura inglese dalle origini al XIX secolo e un livello di padronanza dell'inglese che consenta agli studenti di sostenere parte dell'esame in lingua.

Obiettivi
Gli studenti dovranno acquisire una conoscenza adeguata degli eventi storici e delle rivoluzioni scientifico-filosofiche che, nei primi decenni del Novecento, condussero alla frammentazione dell'intero sistema socio-culturale europeo. Dovranno comprendere a fondo le modalità estetico-narrative mediante cui, in Gran Bretagna, romanzieri, poeti e drammaturghi cercarono e sperimentarono nuovi modelli espressivi, stili e linguaggi capaci di rendere conto di un reale ormai mutato. Gli studenti dovranno acquisire una adeguata conoscenza delle più importanti espressioni della letteratura inglese del XX secolo e di alcuni dei più importanti autori contemporanei. Gli autori approfonditi saranno: W. Owen, W.B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot, V. Woolf, J. Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, E.M. Forster, J. Conrad, G. Orwell, S. Beckett, D. Walcott, M. Atwood, K. Ishiguro, Ian McEwan.

Contenuto
Nei primi decenni del Novecento l’intero sistema socio-culturale europeo si frammenta a seguito di eventi storici e rivoluzioni scientifico-filosofiche di eccezionale portata che creano con il passato – e con le forme e i modelli che lo avevano interpretato e rappresentato – una frattura non più rimarginabile. Elaborare nuovi modelli espressivi, stili e linguaggi che rendano conto di un reale ormai disintegrato è, anche in Gran Bretagna, l’obiettivo primario delle avanguardie artistico-letterarie della prima metà del secolo. Il percorso che conduce dallo sperimentalismo poetico di T. S. Eliot alle “non-forme” moderniste dei romanzi di J. Joyce e V. Woolf sarà il focus della prima parte del corso. L’attenzione sarà poi rivolta alle opere di E.M. Forster, D.H. Lawrence e G. Orwell, considerati nelle loro specificità, per giungere, infine, al teatro (sovvertitore di tutti i modelli praticati fino a quel momento) di S. Beckett e quindi alle voci di scrittori a noi contemporanei quali I. McEwan e K. Ishiguro. Lo studio approfondito di ciascun autore e l’analisi critico-testuale dei versi e dei passi scelti saranno sempre supportati da materiale didattico multimediale al fine di rendere più agevole il dialogo con i testi in lingua inglese. Yeats, The Lake Isle of Innisfree (1890) / The Second Coming; W. Owen, “Dulce et Decorum est Pro Patria Mori” (1917), V. Woolf, Mrs Dalloway (1925) / To the Lighthouse (1927); J. Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), “The Dead” (da Dubliners, 1914), E.M. Forster, A Passage to India (1924), D.H. Lawrence, Sons and Lovers (1913), G. Orwell, 1984 (1948), I. McEwan, Machines like Me (2019), K. Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go (2010).

Testi adottati
Per quanto riguarda la parte generale, gli studenti potranno scegliere di studiare o dal testo in lingua inglese (sostenendo l’esame in lingua inglese) o da quello in italiano (sostenendo parte dell’esame in italiano e parte - due autori a scelta - in inglese). Metodo di insegnamento
Lezioni frontali supportate dall’utilizzo di strumenti digitali. La spiegazione degli argomenti e le analisi testuali saranno supportate da materiale digitale in PPT.

Metodo di valutazione
Prova orale
L’esame sarà orale. Potrà essere sostenuto in lingua inglese oppure in lingua italiana (nel secondo caso – esame sostenuto in italiano – è obbligatorio portare due autori in lingua inglese).
Per quanto riguarda i parametri di valutazione, si terrà conto: delle competenze acquisite; della qualità dell’esposizione – in entrambe le lingue; della capacità di elaborazione di pensiero critico; del livello di lettura, comprensione, analisi stilistica delle poesie e dei classici inglesi oggetto di analisi durante il corso.

Prerequisites
Both a good knowledge of English literature from its origins to the 19th century and a good level of English language are required

Learning outcomes
The course aims at developing students’ literary knowledge and critical abilities through the reading and the analysis of twentieth-century English literature texts considering the framework of their historical and cultural background. The texts will be approached with both individual work and class discussion and will be analysed through close reading and in the light of broader questions. Students will be also exposed to the most influent approaches of modern and contemporary criticism.

Course contents
In Europe during the first decades of the 20th century the social and cultural system undergoes dramatic changes because of exceptional historical events and scientific and philosophical revolutions which mark a crucial break with the recent past and the ways the world had been until then represented. In Great Britain the literary and artistic avant-gardes try to develop new forms, styles and languages, capable to give a clear idea of so complex phenomena. The first part of the course will focus on the ideal path which goes from T.S. Eliot's experimentalism in poetry to the novels written by J. Joyce and V. Woolf. The works by E.M. Forster, D.H. Lawrence and G. Orwell will then be taken into critical account, followed by a reading of the plays by Beckett - who marked a new start in the field of the British and European theatre - and of the novels by some contemporary writers like I. McEwan e K. Ishiguro. A close critical and stylistic analysis of all the authors and works cited will be always supported by audiovisual aids, in order to allow the students an easier and more complete approach to the English texts.

Text Books
As regards the general literary part, students may opt either to study from a text in English (in this case they will take the exam in English) or to study from the Italian version of it (taking the exam partly in Italian and partly in English - two authors to be chosen by the student). Frontal lessons will be supported by the use of digital tools.

Assessment methods
Oral Examination
The exam will be oral. It can be taken in English or in Italian (in the second case - exam taken in Italian - it is mandatory to bring two authors / themes in English).
As far as the evaluation, the following parameters will be taken into account: acquired skills; the quality of the oral presentation – in both languages; critical thinking processing capacity; the level of reading, comprehension, stylistic analysis of the poems and English excerpts analyzed during the lectures.
